However they didn't use these temples as a place to go to church or praise the lord , they used their temples as a house for the gods and goddesses. They thought if they gave them a home they would protect and sustain their community. It was the gods that controlled their country. The Greeks thought that they controlled the sun and the rain which grew their crops, the wind that guided their boats so it was in the communities best interest to make the gods and goddesses because some of the gods would turn on the communities if they were not looked after properly.
The temple was normally built in a sacred enclosure known as the temenos which was a piece of land reserved for kings or the gods. It normally contained a natural feature like a cave, waterfall which is where most of the public did their worshipping. The public wasn't allowed to enter the temple only the priests that were going in to perform rituals on behalf of the community.
The temples were made of stone so that the temple would last for a long time. Their temples were equipped with the finest needs. The gods hade their own servants who offered the gods daily food and water. They also had a share in the profits of the harvest and of any military or trading activity.
